Performance and Achievement Committee meeting was called to order by Chair Juan José López at 5:03 p.m.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Clingan, Juan José López, Shwaw Vang (arrived 5:05 p.m.)

MEMBERS ABSENT: None

OTHER BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Carol Carstensen, Bill Keys, Ruth Robarts, Johnny Winston, Jr. (arrived 5:06 p.m.)

1. Approval of Minutes

It was moved by Juan José López and seconded by Bill Clingan to approve the Performance and Achievement Committee minutes dated December 13, and December 20, 2004. Motion unanimously carried by those present.

4. Research Underlying the Basis for the MMSD Science Curriculum and Instruction

(Written materials provided: copy of the PowerPoint presentation - MMSD K-8 Science Program, January 2005. Copies are attached to the original of these minutes.)

Mary Ramberg, Director of Teaching and Learning, introduced Lisa Wachtel, Coordinator for Science and Environmental Education, who made the presentation. Also present were Elementary and Secondary Instructional Resource Teachers Anne Schoenemann and Sue Johnson. The presentation focused on grades K-8 and began with a video clip of students in a classroom doing research about sound and vibration.

DISCUSSION: Integration, implementation. Gaps - achievement, gender, relationship of science gap to those in reading and math. Materials; FOSS research, materials for parents. Assessment.
